There is a huge unmet need for sick child care. Each day more
than 350,000 children younger than 14 years of age with both parents
working are too sick to attend school or child care. Working mothers
are absent from their jobs from 5 to 29 days per year caring for ill
children. This costs employers between $2 and $12 billion annually.
Obstacles exist that hamper the development of needed sick child
care programs. There is an absence of providers largely due to
lack of information, lack of licensing procedures for sick child care,
difficulty getting insurance, and funding challenges.
Providers, parents, child care professionals and employers need
information about sick child care. Providers need an information
clearinghouse and a referral network of other providers, organizations
and resources that can help them. Parents and child care professionals
need information on sick child care resources in their communities and
on ways to promote the creation of new services. Employers need
information on how their support of sick child care services can help
reduce their absenteeism costs.
What is NASCD?
NASCD is a non-profit, educational organization that was developed
in 1988 as a result of a research project designed to quantify the
need for sick child care.
The organization was established to:
- Support the establishment of high quality sick child care
programs nationwide.
- Substantiate and quantify the need for new sick child care
programs nationwide.
- Promote the establishment of new sick child care services by
researching and disseminating needed information.
- Promote and participate in sick child care research.
What does NASCD do?
Our goal, as an organization, is to make available as much
information as we can to as many people as possible. We aim to do this
by continuing to hold a annual conference, by publishing a quarterly
newsletter, by conducting research projects, and by making available
information about sick child care.
- ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCES: We recently held the 5th Annual
Conference of the Association, "Building Bridges to
Success." This annual conference is a rare opportunity to
exchange much valuable information regarding sick child care.
Despite the growing number of programs that serve ill children,
information about the topic is scarce.
- NEWSLETTERS: Published periodically.
- RESEARCH PROJECTS: Original research on issues vital to sick
child care are conducted, sponsored and made available to those
interested.
- INCREASED PUBLIC AWARENESS OF SICK CHILD CARE: TV networks,
radio stations, magazines and newspapers contact us regularly for
information.
